On this blog for Danburg Properties of Boca Raton, we’ve written extensively on the power technology brings in helping run our business. Whether developing, leasing or managing Boca Raton commercial, office or warehouse properties, everyone on the Danburg team relies on technology to help us do our jobs better. From the front office to back office to staff in the field, desktop and laptop computers, smart phones, even tablet computers and iPads make us more connected and efficient.

Yet we were struck by a recent IT World article about what college students should consider when weighing whether to buy a new laptop. Reading the article, we couldn’t help but internalize its message a bit.

“What should I consider when buying a new laptop?” we wondered.

For example, the tips included Laptop over tablet or Chromebook, and Whenever possible and cost effective, buy the more powerful or ultra-portable device.

While we could argue some of them – we’ve blogged about the effectiveness of a Chromebook for the Google enthusiast, and we’re not giving up on our iPads at any cost – most of the tips were sound. Businesses must weigh the cost, performance, size and usability of any device. If you’re a road warrior or a property manager, what works best – a ultra-portable laptop or a tablet? Would a Mac jibe with your current IT network, or is it outside your existing set-up?

And remember: This is an important purchase. Consider buying devices with the latest specifications or functions – even touchscreen. You’ll get a more robust experience and upgrade less frequently.

But also, this isn’t a lifelong commitment. We often stumble, hem and haw about whether to “pull the trigger” on the expense. If you need it, buy it. First, ask your friends and peers. Talk to your IT guy. But make the purchase. Time wasted could be money lost.

Whether it’s for a team managing 1 million square feet of office, commercial and warehouse space in southern Palm Beach County, or a student headed off to college, read the tips to see what may suit your style, budget and corporate – or college – needs.
