Dog-Friendly Beaches One Step Toward More Livable Communities

Written on October 2, 2013 at 1:23 pm

CourtesyBringFidoOrgNews that the Boca Raton City Commission has agreed to lift its ban and make a section of its beach dog-friendly should be good news for pet owners and proponents of urban planning and livable communities everywhere.

Like Fido himself, the details remain fuzzy. The stretch of beach has not yet been decided, though locations likely could be a 100-yard area between South Beach and Red Reef Parks, or Spanish River Park. The days and times are likely to be Friday through Sunday, from 5pm until Sunset, and possibly certain morning hours, according to WPEC-TV CBS 12.

Dogs must be leashed unless in the water, and owners must clean up after their pets. A pilot program could debut in November.

This could be the next step in positioning Boca Raton as a model, 21st Century community.

From east to west, the city is embracing planned mobility and livability principles that make it attractive to residents, business owners and those considering opening or relocating a business in the area.

To the west, plans are underway to develop the Northwest Section into a mixed-use enclave of luxury residences and retail development designed to enhance and serve the growing business presence along Congress Avenue and surrounding areas. Dog-friendly parks and amenities are part of the plans.

This all serves a growing “regionalism” that leaders throughout Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties have embraced. Air and seaports are growing, and rail and cargo facilities are being enhanced. Business leaders, executives and employees alike all know people commute freely across county lines. Tri-Rail is planning another stop to the north near Palm Beach International Airport.

While the possibility of a dog beach may seem like a small, almost inconsequential component of such dramatic regional changes, it’s important in the creation of a region considered “livable” to those who call this area home – and those who may plan to move here.

And the dogs may get a kick out of frolicking on the beach, too.
