Look who took cabanas at Lynn’s presidential debate watch party

Written on September 14, 2012 at 4:30 pm

With the conventions behind them and their focus on the debates, President Barack Obama and GOP contender Mitt Romney could have thousands watching their final exchange via video on Lynn University Bachelor’s, master’s & online degrees‘s soccer field here the night of Oct. 22.

Commercial landlord Jamie Danburg knew right away it was worth $10,000 to have a presence at “Red, White & View,” Lynn’s watch party with arrangements made in advance. Publix, Cisco, Siemens and AT&T will also be among the firms that have bought a cabana so far, or whose sponsorships included them, according to Barbara Cambia, director of corporate relationships for Lynn.

Danburg is not on the board or a Lynn alumni or parent. But as soon as he heard Lynn would be the site of the final Presidential Debate, he called. “Jamie was one of the first people who really got it, who understood,” Cambia said.

Investing in a cabana allowed Danburg, president of Danburg Properties of Boca Raton, to post the Lynn debate logo on his business home page, issue a press release and a blog post. “It’s a great community decision,” he said.

Publix didn’t need arm-twisting either. “My understanding is that the university approached us and other businesses in the area, but being a Florida-based company we really saw the opportunity to help a really great Florida institution,” said Kim Reynolds, the Miami-based spokesperson.

Each cabana is 15-by-15 feet with an open front, and will have living room-style furniture. Cambia compared the cabanas to the ones used at golf outings and other outdoor sporting events.

Danburg said he expects Lynn to “create an environment for us on the soccer field, and there will be big-screen movie theater monitors and all the sponsors and the leadership in government and the private side.”

That’s exactly what Lynn has planned: “There will be two sections of cabanas fenced off with white lattice, so only cabana ticket holders are permitted in this area,” according to Cambia. “VIP hospitality tents providing food and beverages to the cabana ticket holders will be available.” Sponsors will have their own “Red, White & View” pass for themselves and up to 20 guests.

There’s no private catering, but a hospitality tent will be hosted and sponsored by Red, the Steakhouse and Rosso Italia, Seasons 52 and Oceans 234, according to Cambia. Brewzzi is making special beer for the occasion. “An actual Knight Club with a full cash bar and entertainment, a dozen or so gourmet food trucks with every kind of food imaginable, live music, a deejay entertainment and activities for kids including bounce houses,” said Cambia, adding that the Fighting Knights is the name of Lynn’s sports teams.

The debate starts at 9 p.m., and pre-debate programming is planned at the watch party. The campus will be on lockdown, so whoever cabana owners invite will have to stay until the end, Cambia said.

Bob Schieffer, the chief Washington correspondent for CBS News and moderator of “Face the Nation,” will moderate the debate in the Keith C. and Elaine Johnson Wold Performing Arts Center on campus. Lynn is having a lottery for student tickets and tickets are not available, according to the university.

Oct. 7 is the deadline to buy a cabana and double cabanas are available, Cambia said. The debate website is http://debate2012.lynn.edu.

Buying a cabana “allowed us to help the university make enhancements on their campus,” Publix’s Reynolds said.

“It was so fortunate for Lynn to be chosen and they did a lot of hard work for this,” said Danburg, who has hosted Lynn interns and has at least one Lynn employee. “Boca is my home and my family is here, and this where our lives are. We want to see Boca prosper and continue to be such a desirable place.”
