Most Overused Hurricane Phrases

2 Most Overused Phases in Hurricane Season:

It’s late August and the kids are back in school.  As usual, our attention is focused on the Caribbean, where another potentially dangerous storm lurks offshore. We can therefore be certain that the media will be salivating over the next big story…and just as certain that we will be hearing my two favorite hurricane phrases:

It’s time to “Hunker down” and “We’re not out of the woods yet.”

What exactly is hunkering?
Do we hunk or do we hunker?
As a child, I was never taught to hunker.
And if we hunker, does that make us a hunkerer?
And what is the opposite of hunkering?
When the threat subsides, do we hunker up?

As Irene appears to be headed east of South Florida, we’ll hear that “we’re not out of the woods yet”. Have you ever heard a newscaster in the midst of the storm say: “Jim, I believe we’re in the woods…”

I doubt it… but I’m sure we’ll hear “we’re not out of the woods yet” dozens of times in the coming months.

Hopefully you’ve enjoyed our somewhat lighthearted take on Hurricane season. Please keep in mind that Hurricanes are serious business and that you should always be prepared. Right now, it looks like this one is going to miss us, but we’re not out of the woods yet! In the event that the storm takes an unexpected turn, be prepared to hunker down – if we only knew what that meant.  We’ll continue to post information on Irene on our website at www.danburg.com.

And now for a shameless plug regarding storm resistant features at Danburg Management’s properties: Holland Drive Industrial Park, The Preserve and Peninsula Corporate Center feature impact glass while Peninsula also provides full generator backup.
